
About Professor Getachew
Professor Getachew Metaferia is a Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. A respected scholar and educator, he has dedicated his career to teaching, research, and advancing dialogue on African politics, international relations, and global peacebuilding.
Professor Metaferia is a Fulbright Senior Scholar and served as a J. William Fulbright Fellow at Tel Aviv University (2018–2019), where he taught and conducted empirical research on the Beta Israel (Ethiopian Jews). He has also participated in numerous international academic initiatives, including fellowships and study programs in Jordan, Peru, China, Thailand, Myanmar, and Namibia, with research focusing on conflict resolution, post-independence state-building, and comparative politics.
His scholarship is widely published. Among his recent works are: “Ethiopian Jews: Glorious History and Current Reality” (Walters Art Museum & Yale University Press, 2024); “The Battle of Adwa” in the Encyclopedia of African History (Oxford University Press, 2024); and the book Ethiopia and the United States: History, Diplomacy, and Analysis (Algora, 2009). He also co-edited the influential volume The Battle of Adwa: Reflections on Ethiopia’s Historic Victory Against European Colonialism (Algora, 2005).
Beyond academia, Professor Metaferia is a frequent media contributor and analyst, offering commentary on international affairs through outlets such as American Public Radio, Voice of America (Amharic and English), Deutsche Welle, and SAS Australia Radio. His expertise and voice continue to shape scholarly and public understanding of African and global politics.
