About Shimelis
Shimelis Amare came to the United States in 1978 at the age of 21. He earned a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and holds a Professional Engineering License (PE) from the State of California. In 1988, he joined the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), where he spent ten years in the design section before moving into leadership roles managing construction projects and supervising engineering staff. He retired in 2018 after three decades of service.
Beyond his professional career, Shimelis has been deeply engaged in community and cultural initiatives. In 1996, he co-founded the Ethiopian Educational Association in Los Angeles (EEALA), serving as chairman for two years to promote education. In 2008, he published a poetry book and CD titled የሕይወት ነፅብራቅ (Reflections of Life). He also served as chairman of the Renaissance Dam Project Support Council in Los Angeles in 2012.
Shimelis met his wife, Dr. Eleni Hailu, while they were both students. They are proud parents of two children: Mahilet Amare, a civil engineer, and Dr. Solomon Amare, a medical doctor.
